Hey, wanna buy a bed?

04Apr09

I was on my way home from work this morning and on my way home, Marc texted me, asking me if I wanted to get a bed.  My response?  Hells yes, I want to get a new bed!  Ours has been miserable, miserable, miserable.

First, a little clarification:  Our mattress is absolutely lovely, comfortable, firm without being too firm, and pretty much new (we got it two years ago).  Unfortunately, when we bought the mattress, we made two major mistakes.  One, we didn’t actually buy a bed.  Instead, we just used the regular old metal frame.  This was fine when we lived in Cambridge, and the bed was on carpeting.  It kept the whole thing kind of firm, solid and in place.  However, when we moved to our house in Arlington, the frame rested on hardwood (we have all hardwood floors) and it’s not as stable as it once was.  The cross-beam on the bed is also missing a pad on its foot, and so the cross beam is often uneven and falls off the frame.  This is a major problem and the bed breaks frequently.  And not even when we’re doing anything fun.  Secondly, we bought a high-profile, non-split box spring.  When we moved, the box spring was too big and too wide to get around our front stairs (there’s a turn/corner when you go up our stairs).  The stupid movers actually had to SAW our box spring in half to get it up the stairs.  Since then, it’s never quite been the same, meaning it’s way rickety, creaky, and probably not as supportive as it could be.

Thankfully, Marc’s text came at a great time, because I was feeling at the end of my rope with the stupid bed situation.  It was breaking on a semi-regular basis, and it was HARD to fix, especially when Marc was gone.

Of course, we had a lot of restrictions, mostly surrounding the color of wood that would be necessary to match our room.  We didn’t have TOO many to choose one and actually ended up settling on the first one that we saw.  (Of course, after we looked at the other ones!)  It will be delivered NEXT Saturday, so we can be in a sturdy, stable bed in one week from today.

We also got a split box spring with a lower profile, which will be a welcome change from our other, broke-down box spring.

Marc also found a headboard for our guest bed on craigslist and is now on his way home from picking it up.  It was $25, which is a STEAL and will help the guest bedroom get a little more character.  I’ll take a picture when it’s set up and post that.  Or you’ll just have to sleep over sometime soon.  🙂
